About

Mammoth Film Festival is a competitive festival. Generally, we accept independent feature-length and short films which have not been commercially exhibited, and do not have any distribution deals in place. If you have a film with prior distribution commitments or studio backing, or which doesn’t meet the eligibility requirements for some other reason, you may submit it in the Screening Series category. If you would like to organize a premiere or other event as part of the Mammoth Film Festival, please contact us.

Competitions

The 2010 Mammoth Film Festival is comprised of five different film competitions.

Feature Film Tournament – accepts feature-length films in four categories: Documentary, Foreign, Drama, and Comedy/Musical. This is the main competition, and accepted films will compete for four Best in Category awards, as well as the overall Best Picture award.

Short Film Competition – accepts short films, up to 48 minutes in length, in any genre. Short films are divided into documentary and narrative genres, and compete for a Best Short Film award in their genre.

Green Film Competition – accepts films of any length, provided the film fulfills one of two requirements: (1) the film covers an eco-related topic such as alternative energy, global warming, progress/problems with disease or food supply as related to the environment, etc.; or (2) the film was made in an environmentally conscious manner. The winning film will be awarded Best Green Film.

Extreme (Action) Sports Competition – accepts films of any length, covering any extreme sports topic. Topics could include, for example: adventure-style films on winter/summer extreme sports such as skiing, snowboarding, rockclimbing, biking, etc.; historical or educational films covering the origins of one or more extreme sports; biographical or social films profiling an athlete, or the general culture of a sport. The winning film will be awarded Best Extreme Sports Film.

Faith-Based Film Competition – accepts films of any length, in both narrative and documentary style, and is open to films that use faith-based, religious, or inspirational themes in the characters, topics, issues, or storylines.

Format

The MFF Feature Film competition is structured in a unique elimination-style tournament format. After an initial jury round, competing films are seeded in brackets by genre, and compete head to head to advance to the next round. All judging is done by the audience — one film is eliminated, and the favorite moves on.

The Short, Green, Extreme Sports, and Faith-Based competitions follow a more traditional overall voting system.

Awards

In the Feature Film Tournament, awards are given to the winning feature film in each of the four genres (Documentary, Foreign, Drama, and Comedy/Musical), and the Festival’s grand prize, Best Picture, is awarded to the top overall feature film in the competition.

Short films will compete in a separate contest, and the winners will receive the Best Short Film award in either Narrative or Documentary genres.

Green films, Extreme Sports films, and Faith-based films will also compete in a separate contests, and each winner will receive the “Best of” award in the appropriate category.
